Sophrology & Mindfulness Techniques for Teens
Ages 11 to 19

This is an interactive and dynamic course that teaches relaxation and mindful techniques in a way that engages the unique brain of adolescents. Typically each class includes a brief presentation by the teacher with the help of lively visuals, games, and practical exercises and demonstrations to make the ideas presented vivid and relevant to their lives. Exercise includes breathing work, light movements, guided visualizations, and meditations.

For many students the course can lead to immediate and striking results: they feel happier, calmer, and more fulfilled; they can concentrate better and they have an easily accessible toolkit to deal with stress and anxiety. Students are encouraged to practice the exercises at home with the help of practice cards and audio recordings of the exercises.

What are the benefits for the students?
This activity aims to help the young people overcome the challenges of discovering who they are outside of their family as their brain develops to adulthood  –  it aims to help young people:
  • experience greater well-being (e.g. feel happier, calmer, more fulfilled)
  •  fulfill their potential and pursue their own goals e.g. be more creative, more relaxed, academically, personally
  •  improve their concentration and focus, in classes, in exams and tests, on the sports field, when playing games, when paying attention and listening to others
  • work with difficult emotions mental states such as depressive, ruminative and anxious thoughts and low moods
  • cope with the everyday stresses and strains of adolescent life such as exams, relationships, sleep problems, family issues
Topics Covered that are specific to this age group include:
  • Being present: moving from reacting to responding
  • Noticing: watching the thought traffic in the mind
  • Focus & Motivation: cultivating curiosity & kindness
  • Recognizing Worry: noticing how our mind can play tricks on us
  • Positive Vibes: being present in the heart
  • Low & High Energy Words: how the words used can impact mood, beliefs and wellbeing
  • Playing Attention: training the mind as a muscle
  • First Success: remember what it feels like to be successful
  • Anchoring: changing my bodies reaction to stress
  • Happy Body: releasing built-up stress to relax the body through movement

MINDFULNESS for 7 to 11 years
This activity is based on the Paws.b Mindfulness program as taught by the UK Mindfulness In Schools Organization. Mindfulness is a meditative practice that is non-secular but with origins from Buddhist traditions.

Mindfulness promotes well-being
  • It offers knowledge and skills applicable to the child’s life
  • It can be individually tailored to suit each child
  • It extends the thinking skills learning It helps children understand themselves better
  • It helps them to be resilient and resourceful when life is challenging
Skills and understanding taught can be available throughout their school life and beyond

What will my child learn?
They learn about parts of the brain known through neuroscience evidence to be impacted by mindfulness practice
  • Ways to steady themselves when their mind/body is busy or out of balance
  • Ways to respond rather than react – and therefore take the best care of themselves
  • Ways to relate to their thinking processes and how these impact their emotions and body state
  • Ways that mindfulness can support them in all the activities and relationships of their lives
Is there any evidence to show that Paws.b helps the children at school or generally in their lives?
A Master's Thesis study that I was personally involved in, in an International primary school in the La Côte region of Switzerland, showed pupils who were taught mindfulness lessons had increased positive attitudes towards their learning after the lessons compared to the pupils who weren’t taught mindfulness. Additionally, the academic results were better for the pupils that were taught mindfulness. All the lessons seemed to appeal and benefit both boys and girls.

The feedback from children who have taken part in Paws.b is very positive. The children report enjoying the lessons and finding the learning supports them in a broad range of situations from being able to concentrate and focus more easily in school to helping them feel calmer in exams and competitions. Many have described sharing the learning with other family members and finding it helps them with their relationships with family and friends.
